Piercing in the Time of COVID-19

Now that piercing shops are open, many will find it is not entirely business as usual. Every shop has its own rules and state regulations, so it is best to check with your shop before heading in, but these are some of the most common things to expect while getting pierced right now.

  1. Make an appointment. This is generally good practice, but many shops are only allowed to take clients with appointments, and no walk-ins.
  2. If you have been sick in the past two weeks, or have come in contact with someone who is sick or has tested positive for COVID-19, reschedule your appointment. The shop will appreciate it, even on short notice.
  3. Wear a mask. You will likely be expected to leave your mask on the entire length of the appointment. As a result, many shops are unable to perform oral or nasal piercings at this time.
  4. Keep your hands clean. Most shops will provide you with hand sanitizer before you go back into the piercing room.
  5. Be patient! Many shops are overwhelmed with appointments right now, and it might take longer than usual for you to get in.
  6. Prepare to go alone. Most shops are only allowing the piercee into the piercing room, so if you need a friend or family member for emotional support, this is probably not the time to go.
  7. Most shops will only allow 1-3 people in their waiting areas, so show up on time for your appointment, unless you want to stand around outside to wait.

These are not all the rules and regulations that shops are putting in place, both for your safety and theirs, but also so they are able to be open, per state guidelines. If the shop’s rules are something you cannot abide by, just wait a little longer for your piercing. This especially applies to nasal and oral piercings, as piercers are not going to violate the rules for anyone – not even you.

We all know it is a difficult time, so don’t forget to tip your piercer well, and follow the rules. Under the circumstances of Covid 19, shops will be taking precautions to make sure you are pierced in a sterile environment. So let’s help them keep everyone safe and the shop open for other clients.

Happy piercing!
